NEW LAUNCH | Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Floral Shock

Here at The Fragrance Shop, we are big fans of the original YSL Black Opium. Launching back in 2015, this rock and roll fragrance made us all stand up and pay attention with its energetic blend of notes such as black coffee and vanilla – full of mystery and energy. With this in mind, we were very excited when the latest launch in the Black Opium family landed on our desks.

Fresh and invigorating, Black Opium Floral Shock hits like a burst of fragrant flowers, cold as morning dew, hard-hitting like that first jolt espresso when you first wake up.

YSL describe the scent as ‘like nothing that has come before, yet with the comforting familiarity of the coffee notes found in the original’. The fragrance takes your breath away with a unique tension between sun-baked eroticism and a cool froideur all of its own. Let’s take a look at the breakdown:

Top Notes: Bergamot Essence, Pear Accord, Freesia Accord
Heart Notes: Orange Blossom Absolute, Golden Gardenia Accord, Solar-floral accord
Base Notes: Coffee Accord, Sandalwood Accord, Vanilla

To help us understand the difference between our favourite fragrances, we caught up with Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Honorine Blanc and Olivier Cresp – the perfumers behind the fragrance. Take a look at what they had to say now…

What does the word “shock” mean to you?

It’s about being innovative, smelling something totally unexpected, something that surprises and that we want to smell again! When we first launched Black Opium it was shocking because of its overdose of coffee, which was elegantly balanced with enveloping floral notes. It felt transgressive; it delivered in terms of adrenaline and excitement – something that was so familiar (coffee) taking on a new and unexpected addictive quality that was exquisitely feminine.

What is the shock value about Black Opium Floral Shock?

Black Opium Floral Shock continues the tradition of presenting something so new and different that it creates a ripple effect in the world of fragrance. Here we have the black coffee accord combined with a fresh mineral accord, two fragrance facets which have never been associated before! The floral notes add the feeling of a sea breeze , which balances with the floral heart of the fragrance, enriched with vibrancy and zest using unique qualities of jasmine and orange blossom. It’s truly and innovation.

YSL Black Opium Floral Shock EDP is available in 30ml, 50ml and 90ml. Prices start at £50.00.
